August Book Roundup

First off let me say I did a lot of reading this summer! I am excited to share with you a few of my hits and misses. Reading is an escape for me and I love a book that I can read quickly on vacation or over the course of a weekend. Check out what I read this month. Everything can be ordered on Amazon.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover strays away from her typical romance trope and brings us a psychological thriller with Verity. I was excited to read this because everyone on Instagram and Tik Tok raved about it.

Verity is the story of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin who accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, the husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, but what she doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died. Lowen keeps the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s disturbing words.

Personally, this was not my favorite Colleen Hoover book. I give it a 3 out of 5. The characters were extremely unnerving and I could not connect with them. The plot seemed way too far-fetched for my liking and it just did not have that grab my attention that all her other books have had. If you have read it and loved it I want to hear your thoughts!

Six Years by Harlan Coben

You can always count on Harlan Coben for that page-turning keep you up all night thriller! This one was no different and its clever twists and turns kept me up past my bedtime. I give this one 4 out of 5 stars.

Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd.

But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for…but she is not Natalie.

As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can’t be found, or don’t remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. And soon, Jake’s search for the woman who broke his heart puts his very life at risk as he uncovers the secrets and lies that love can hide….

One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I love anything by TJR and this one was no different. I loved this book and give it a 5 out of 5. It is a must read, so definitely add it to your list.

Emma marries her high school sweetheart and they spend their 20’s loving each other and traveling the world and building a life together.

When he goes missing after a helicopter accident and is presumed dead, Emma’s world crumbles. She moves back home to the town and life she didn’t want, grieves and then finally attempts to put her life back together.

Years later she opens herself back up to love with someone from her past and falls in love and gets engaged. And then she gets the call….the one saying her first love and husband has been found after all these years and she’s torn between her husband and her fiance.

That Summer by Jennifer Weiner

Anything by Jennifer Weiner usually makes my summer reading list. After all she is called the “boss of the beach read”. I have to say I have enjoyed some of her others a bit more and I give this one a 3.5 out of 5.

Daisy Shoemaker can’t sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she’s got it good. So why is she up all night?

While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, she’s also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisy’s driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisy’s making dinner, Diana’s making plans to reorganize corporations. Diana’s glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisy’s simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy?
